ISLANDERS HEAD TO LOUISIANA TO BEGIN THREE-GAME SET
The Texas A&M-Corpus Christi baseball team visits Hammond, La. this weekend for three-game series with Southeastern Louisiana looking to climbing back in the race for a spot in the Southland Conference Tournament to be held in Corpus Christi May 20-23.
The series is slated to begin on Friday's game at 6 p.m. Due to possible inclement weather Saturday's game has been rescheduled for a noon start. The finale is set for a 1 p.m. start.
The Islanders (13-24) enter the contest in 12th place in the Southland Conference at 5-13 with 15 league games remaining. They are three games behind Nicholls State for the eighth spot in the tournament. The Lions (21-14) are 10-8 in the league in a tie for fifth place.
A&M-Corpus Christi, which lost a pair of midweek games to No. 9 Texas, enters looking for its second SLC series win in a row after beating Stephen F. Austin in 2-of-4 last weekend. Texas State swept the Lions, who won midweek games against Tulane and Louisiana-Lafayette, last weekend in San Marcos.
Martin Parra his posted a hit in 11 league games in a row entering the contest and Jeramie Marek is seventh in hitting in league games with a .408 average. With 11 home runs, Trey Hernandez is third in SLC. On the mound, Bryant Sparkman, who broke Chris Wall's all-time mark for appearances of 55 on Wednesday at Texas, is tied for the league lead in SLC with 21. Roy Ferdin, who will start on Saturday, is tops in the Southland with 10 starts.
Southeastern enters sixth in the league in hitting and seventh in pitching with a 5.61 ERA. Cass Hargis leads a group of six Lions hitting over .300 with a .340 average as they are hitting .298 as a team. Along with Ty Summerlin, Hargis has scored a team-best 36 runs scored. Brandon Street, who is tied for second on the team with a .336 average with Josh Cryer, leads the team with four home runs and 37 runs batted in.
Righty Ryan Boudreaux, who will start on Friday in the opener, leads the Lions with five wins, is in the top 10 in ERA (3.98), wins (5), opposing batting average (.237), and strikeouts (40). Saturday's scheduled starter for the Lions is Brandon Efferson is fourth with 44 strikeouts and tied for eighth in the league with 4-3. Josh Janway is first in the league with a .224 average.
