AUSTIN – The Texas A&M-Corpus Christi baseball team took an early 1-0 lead, but No.-9 ranked Texas scored eight straight to hand the Islanders an 8-1 defeat on Wednesday night at UFCU Disch-Falk Field.

The loss drops the Islanders to 13-24 on the season overall, while the Longhorns move to 26-8.

"We continue to be inconsistent on offense," said Islander head coach Scott Malone. "We don't see the same team at the plate from at bat to at bat.

"Its about baby steps. We want to become the type of program that Texas is. and to do that we need to be more consistent."

Jeramie Marek put the Islanders on the board first. With two outs in the top of the second, Marek belted his second career home run into the Islander bullpen off Brandon Workman.

Five Texas pitchers would not allow the Islanders to score again limiting the visitors to three hits in the final seven innings. Stayton Thomas relieved Workman in the fourth and scattered one hit over three innings to earn his first win of the season, while Kendal Carrillo, Taylor Jungmann and Sam Stafford each pitched an inning. The Longhorn pitching staff, which entered with a national-best 2.16 ERA, struckout 10 Islanders on the night.

The Longhorns evened the game at one in the bottom of the fourth inning. Kevin Keyes led off the inning with a single and scored from second on a RBI single by Kevin Lusson on his first hit of the season.

A&M-Corpus Christi missed an opportunity to regain the lead in the top of the fifth. Jeremy Narvaez led off the inning with a double off Strayton Thomas and moved to third on sacrifice bunt by Justin Greiner. Jonathan Reyes lifted a fly ball to center trying to plate the freshman, but Texas centerfielder Connor Rowe threw a dart to Preston Clark at the plate to throw out Narvaez. The Islanders would get just two runners into scoring position the rest of the way

Texas would take control of the contest with three runs in the fifth. Travis Tucker led off the inning with a triple off Brett Carnline and scored on a sacrifice fly by Brandon Belt to break the tie. UT added two more runs as Tant Shepherd plated on a hit by Brandon Loy off Matt Hudec. Keyes scored on a wild pitch by Hudec,

Carnline suffered the loss dropping to 3-4 on the season as he permitted four runs on eight hits in 4-2/3 innings.

The Longhorns scored four runs in the seventh. Belt and Shepherd began the inning with back-to-back solo home runs. They finished with a pair of two-out runs.

Belt finished 4-for-4 with two RBI and Keyes added three as UT had 15 hits. Tucker and Lusson each had a pair of hits.

The Islanders head to Louisiana next for a three-game series at Southeastern Louisiana. The first game is Friday at 6 p.m.
