ISLANDERS TO FACE ANOTHER TEST WITH TRIP TO LAMAR
Last week, the Texas A&M-Corpus Christi baseball team visited preseason favorite UTSA and came away with a 2-1 series victory at Roadrunner Field. This weekend things don't get much easier for the Islanders as they travel to Beaumont for a three-game set with Lamar.
The Islanders enter the contest winners of four of their last five games raising their record to 11-18 overall and to 3-9 in the Southland Conference. A&M-Corpus Christi has won seven of its last 10 dating back to its sweep of Texas Tech. At 19-10 overall, the Cardinals enter the weekend with more wins than any other Southland Conference school. They are tied for sixth in the SLC standings with Sam Houston State and Central Arkansas.
Offensively, the Islanders have been on a tear. In their last 10 games, A&M-Corpus Christi has hit .331 raising its average to .295 on the season with 10-or-more hits seven times. During that span, nine Islanders have averaged .300 or better. Jonathan Reyes leads the team with a.412 average and 13 runs during the stretch, while freshmen Weston Montgomery and Jeramie Marek are batting .406 and .370, respectively. Trey Hernandez has four of his nine home runs in the period, which is tied for the league lead. He is also hitting .345 during the stretch, while Martin Parra has 17 RBI in the 10 games.
On the mound, the Islander ERA is nearly a run lower than their season mark. Brett Carnline is 2-0 with the earned-run average with a 1.74 mark, while Hernandez is a two-way threat with a 1-0 won-loss record and two saves. He has not allowed a run in his last eight innings of work and just two hits.
Lamar is led by the top pitching staff in the league. The Cardinals have a league-low 3.91 ERA and have limited opposing hitters to a .256 average. Freshman Eric Harrington, who will start the series opener is 4-0 with a 1.05 ERA, while Matison Smith is 4-1 with a 3.16 ERA. At the plate, Tyler Link leads the Cardinals, who hit .283 as a team, with a .333 average, seven home runs and seven steals. Brian Taylor leads the team with 25 RBI.
The series begins with a 6:30 p.m. contest on Friday with games on Saturday and Sunday at 2 p.m. and 1 p.m. Links to live stats will be available at www.goislanders.com, with live audio also available.
