WOES CONTINUE FOR ISLANDERS AS NICHOLLS TAKES TWO
THIBODAUX, La. The Texas A&M-Corpus Christi baseball team returned to Southland Conference play at Nicholls looking to snap a four-game losing streak, but the Islanders were unable to get momentum back as they were swept 13-3 and 5-1 in a doubleheader at Didier Field on Friday.
The Islanders fall to 4-14 overall and 0-5 in the conference, while Nicholls moves to 8-7 on the year and 3-2 in the league. The teams are slated to conclude the series on Saturday at 6 p.m. weather permitting.
In the first game, Nicholls broke a 0-0 deadlock with four runs in the third sparked by a two-run base hit by Adam Miley. The Colonels extended their lead to 5-0 in the fourth as Josh Swenson scored on a sacrifice fly by Kevin Shlegel.
The Islanders pulled to within three in the top of the fifth rallying for a pair of runs with two outs. After Justin Greiner was hit by a pitch, Jeramie Marek tripled to drive in the first run. Marek then scored on a single by Weston Montgomery.
A&M-Corpus Christi couldn't pull closer as the Colonels outscored the Islanders 8-1 over the final three innings as the game ended after eight innings due to the 10-run rule in league games. No Islander had more than one hit.
Nicholls finished with 12 hits off four TAMUCC pitchers. Keith Kulbeth had a game-high three hits driving in two and scoring two. Chris Murrill and Scott Moseley posted two hits a piece. Four NSU players had two RBI each as Tyler Minto, Schlegel, Kulbeth and Miley drove in a pair.
Justin Grota suffered his first loss of the season for A&M-Corpus Christi. The senior allowed six runs with five earned on seven hits in five innings of work. Grota struck out five and walked one. Brett Gips followed walking a pair without recording an out. Philip Garcia allowed seven runs with just four earned in 2-2/3 innings of work on four hits.
Lance Dupuis improved to 4-3 on the season tossing seven innings of four-hit baseball. He allowed two earned runs while striking out seven with no walks. Brad Delatte pitched the eighth allowing an unearned run.
In the second game, Nicholls never trailed as Murrill scored on a RBI single by Moseley in the bottom of the first. The Colonels stretched their lead with a pair of runs in the fourth on RBI doubles by Josh Labiche and Jason Dennis and a run in the fifth as Moseley plated on a single by Minto.
The Islanders, who stranded eight batters in the second game, put their only crooked number on the board in the sixth. Brycen Bell, who had two hits in the final game, singled and scored on a grounder by Stephen Flora.
Nicholls added its final run in the seventh as Moseley drove in his second run of the game.
TAMUCC was unable to get going against Jarret Dunnam, who allowed just one hit through the first five innings. He raised his record to 2-2 on the season as he scattered four hits over seven innings with one run scoring. Lance Guidroz allowed a hit in two innings of work.
Roy Ferdin suffered the loss for the Islanders as he fell to 1-3. He allowed 10 hits in six innings permitting four earned runs. Andrew Toppert tossed two innings of one-hit baseball to end the game.
