ISLANDERS SWEPT IN OPENING SLC SERIES BY TEXAS STATE
The Texas A&M-Corpus Christi baseball team suffered a third straight loss to Texas State and its seventh overall on Sunday as they fell 10-2 in the series finale of their Southland Conference opening series at Whatabuger Field.
The Islanders (1-7, 0-3) committed five errors in the game, while allowing 11 hits. Meanwhile, the offense managed five hits off Bobcat starter Brian Borski and seven on the night.
"You would like to have something after a weekend like this to hang your hat on that you did positive whether it was getting good swings, playing good defense," said Islander head coach Scott Malone. "We're not doing anything well right now. We'll go back make some changes and see if we can get some things going against the Broncs."
After Texas State scored a run in the first, they scored three in the second. Adam Witek led off the inning with a walk and moved third on a double by Jason Martinson. Witek came home on a sacrifice fly by Jordan Kopycinski. Martinson scored on a ground ball by Bret Atwood. The final run scored when Tyler Sibley, who drew one of three Roy Ferdin walks, plated on a error by Martin Parra with two outs.
The score remained 4-0 until the fifth when Texas State scored four unearned runs. Ferdin appeared to be in control in the inning as he sandwiched a pair of fly outs around a Kyle Livingstone double. With two away, Martinson reached on an error by Parra, who had two in the game, with Livingstone scoring. Following a single by Kopycinski, Martinson scored on a double by Sibley. Atwood finished the scoring with a two-run single.
A&M-Corpus Chirsti, which had one runner in scoring position in the first six innings, crossed the plate in the sixth with its first run. Chris Famiglietti reached on a throwing error by the Bobcats and moved to third on a single by Jeramie Marek. Justin Greiner's sacrifice fly drove in the run off Brian Borksi.
Texas State's final two runs came in the eighth RBI doubles by Paul Goldschmidt and Witek.
In the ninth, Ernie Olivarez tallied TAMUCC's final run after leading the inning off with a single against reliever Lance Loftin. He went to second as Jacob Perales walked and to third Matt Rocha picked up his first college hit. Olivarez came home when Jacob Perez hit into a double play.
Borski moved to 2-0 for the Bobcats. The righty scattered five hits over eight innings with a walk and four strikeouts. He was the third starter in as many days to toss eight straight innings.
Ferdin dropped to 1-1 on the year. He tossed five innings allowing eight runs with just three earned on eight hits. Phillip Garcia tossed two scoreless innings before Trey Hernandez went one inning allowing two runs on three hits. Bryant Sparkman was perfect in the ninth.
Perales and Montgomery led the Islanders with two hits apiece, while Sibley, Atwood and Goldschmidt each had two hits in the contest. Atwood drove in three runs and Goldschmidt two.
The Islanders return to action on Tuesday when they visit Texas-Pan American for a doubleheader beginning at 3 p.m. They return home on Thursday to face Alabama at 6 p.m. in the first game of the Whataburger College Classic.
