Softball Beats North Texas, Falls to No. 7 Arkansas on Day Two

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – The Texas A&M-Corpus Christi softball team edged out a 3-2 win over North Texas but fell to #7 Arkansas 12-0 on Saturday to split day two of the Woo Pig Classic at Bogle Park.

The Islanders (9-9) battled back from a 2-0 deficit early to UNT (12-7) who hit a two-run home run in the first frame to win edge the Mean Green in the end. Junior Kimane Rogron answered UNT's home run with one of her own in the top of the second before two more Islanders crossed home in the fourth for the deciding 3-2 score.

Junior Primrose Aholelei threw her seventh complete game of the season and second this weekend. Aside from allowing two runs in the first, Aholelei kept UNT scoreless for the remaining six innings and struck out 10 in the process to record her sixth win of the year.

Junior Sydney Hoyt and senior Alexandria Torres recorded a run against the Mean Green. Hoyt hit the infield single to reach base and advance Torres to second, while freshman Crystal Davila reached on the fielder's choice to score the two in the same play.

Hoyt then started in the circle for the rematch with #7 Arkansas (18-3), while also being the three-hole hitter. She struck out three Razorbacks through 3.1 innings of work and reached base once.

Senior Quinn De Avila went 1-for-1 at the plate as the only Islander to record a hit against the nationally ranked Razorbacks, which came in the top of the fifth. Rogron and junior Juliana J. Garcia each drew a walk to reach base, but Arkansas would stave off any scoring threat.

With the 9-9 record, the Islanders have not possessed a losing record yet this season.

The Islanders will conclude their final tournament of the nonconference slate this season on Sunday with a 10 a.m. pitch to rematch Iowa State.
