Pauly, Evans Named First Team All-Conference

CHARLOTTE, N.C.-Texas A&M-Corpus Christi?s Sarah Pauly (Phoenix, Ariz.) and Katie Evans (Tempe, Ariz.) were named to the All-Big South Conference First Team, it was announced Thursday. Evans also earned a spot on the conference All-Academic squad.

Pauly, who leads or is tied for the lead in 11 conference statistical pitching categories, continues to reap in awards during a remarkable 2003 campaign in which she was named Pitcher of the Week three times. This season, the sophomore has recorded three no-hitters, including a perfect game, and led the Islanders to a 26-21 record. She also ranks amongst the national leaders in ERA (9th, 0.75), saves (5th, 7), and strikeouts per seven innings (3rd, 11.3).

?It would be very hard to deny the success Sarah has enjoyed this year, ? said Islander head coach Missy Phillips-Dickerson. ?Being named to the first team not only shows her accomplishments this season, but for years to come as well.?

Evans earned first team honors at third base after making a smooth transition from being a two-year starter at first. The junior leads the BSC in doubles (12) and ranks in the top five of eight conference statistical offensive categories. Leading A&M-CC with a .367 batting average, she has tallied 16 multi-hit games, four multi-RBI games, and three multi-run games in the 2003 regular season.

Evans was also named to the 2003 Conference All-Academic Team after posting a 3.87 GPA while majoring in Secondary Education. Earlier in the day, the all-conference third baseman was named to the 2003 Verizon Academic All-District VI squad.

?Katie?s academic accololades speak for themselve,? said Phillips-Dickerson. ?Her consistency on the field has been instrumental to the success of our team. Being named to the first team is an honor she deserves.?

The Islanders open today?s conference tournament against Liberty. The first pitch is scheduled for 4 p.m. CDT and will be statcasted live at bigsouthsports.com.
