Former Miami (Fla.) Hurricane standout Kevin Norris is entering his second season as assistant coach at Texas A&M-Corpus Christi. On the court, Norris works with the guards and is responsible for all conditioning. He also assists in recruiting.
Before coming to the Island, Norris served as an assistant coach at Tallahassee Community College. Prior to his time at Tallahassee, Norris played basketball at Miami under current Florida State University basketball coach Leonard Hamilton.
At Miami, Norris, a four-year letterman, was named to the Big East All-Rookie Team as a freshman. Later that season, he led UM to its first postseason appearance in 31 years with a National Invitation Tournament contest at Penn State.
Prior to his junior season, Norris was named an assistant captain for the Hurricanes. As a junior, he hit a pair of free throws with eight-tenths of a second remaining to give Miami a 61-59 upset win over ninth-ranked Villanova. The victory was the Hurricanes’ first road win over a ranked opponent. As a senior, he led the Hurricanes to their first NCAA appearance since 1960 as a No. 11 seed. He currently holds the school record for steals with 208 and is second all-time in assists with 493.
He is the only player in Miami history to lead the team in assists four consecutive seasons. He was in the starting lineup each game during his final three seasons on his way to a record 108 consecutive games started. At the time he joined the Islanders he was among the Hurricanes’ all-time leaders in three-point field goals made (6th-134), three-point field goals attempted (4th-407), and games played (9th-113).
Following his collegiate career, Norris played overseas in Italy, France, and the Czech Republic, as well as with the Calgary Drillers of the American Basketball Association.
