SAN MARCOS The Texas A&M-Corpus Christi baseball team jumped out to a 2-1 lead after two innings, but it wasn’t enough as Texas State scored 12 runs in its final five at bats en route to a 13-4 win at Bobcat Field Sunday afternoon.
With the loss, the Islanders suffered their second Southland Conference sweep of the season as they dropped to 5-7 in the league and 8-23 overall. The Bobcats moved to 9-3 in the league and 17-10 on the year. A&M-Corpus Christi will look to snap a five-game losing streak when it faces long-time rival Texas-Pan American at Chapman Field at noon on Tuesday.
The Islanders got off to a good start as Chase Williams doubled off Zack Tritz to start the game with his first of three hits on the afternoon. After moving to second on a sacrifice bunt by Brycen Bell, who had his hitting streak snapped at eight games, Williams scored on grounder by Stephen Flora.
After the Bobcats tied the game at one in the bottom of the first, A&M-Corpus regained its lead to 2-1 in the second. Chase Wheaton led off the inning with a double to center and crossed the plate on a single by Bryan Gerondale.
Spenser Dennis broke the game open with two outs in the fifth with a grand slam off Islander starter Trey Hernandez. Hernandez, who was making the first Southland Conference pitching start of his career, allowed six runs on seven hits while walking four and striking out two in 4-2/3 innings. With the , he drops to 0-6.
Trailing 7-2 entering the top of the eighth, Hernandez pulled the Islanders to within three with a two-run home run off Zack Tritz, who left after the blast. Flora, who had two hits on the afternoon, scored on the bomb after leading off with a single for his second hit of the game.
Tritz (6-0) tossed seven innings of nine-hit baseball allowing four runs. He walked one and struck out one. Tritz leads the league with six wins on the year and is 4-0 in league play. Zach Boles and Eric Weaver each pitched an inning of perfect relief.

A&M-Corpus Christi used six pitchers in relief of Hernandez. After Matt Hudec allowed a run on two hits without posting an out, Bryant Sparkman tossed 1-1/3 innings of scoreless baseball. Mike Miller added an inning of perfect relief after Jacob Perez allowed a hit to the only batter he faced. Brett Gips recorded one out, but permitted four runs on four hits, while Jake Olier allowed two runs in two-thirds of an inning.
The Islanders finished the game with nine hits led by Williams and Flora. who combined for five. Texas Stated ended the game with 18 hits led by Goldschmidt’s four. Thomas Field and Dennis each added three.
