AUSTIN – A four-run fourth and six-run sixth inning by the seventh-ranked Texas Longhorns proved to be too much for the Texas A&M-Corpus Christi baseball team Tuesday afternoon as the Islanders dropped a 16-7 decision at UFCU Disch-Falk Stadium.

The Islanders (2-6) and the Longhorns (7-2) will meet again on Wednesday afternoon at 3:15 p.m.

Down 2-0, A&M-Corpus Christi scored three runs off Texas starter Riley Boening in the top of the fourth inning to take a 3-2 lead. With one out, Chase Wheaton reached on an error and moved to third on a double by Jacob Perales down the line in right field. After Wheaton scored on a single by Bryan Gerondale, Trey Hernandez, who is slated to start the mound Wednesday, cleared the bases with a double to left field.

Texas responded with four runs in the bottom of the inning to regain the lead, 6-3. With two outs, Jordan Danks, who was sent down on strikes by Islander starter Jake Olier (0-2) in his first two at bats, put the Longhorns back in front with a two-run home run.

“Jake gave us every opportunity early on to be in the game,” said Islander head coach Scott Malone. “I am happy with what he showed us in his first start. I would like to see us get another good start from Trey tomorrow.”

Olier, who was making his first start as an Islander giving up six runs on seven hits in 3-2/3 innings, would leave the game after Cameron Rupp and Brandon Belt hit back-to-back singles. Brett Gibson relieved Olier and allowed a two-run single to Tant Shepherd as Texas took a 6-3 lead.

“Allowing 10 runs in two innings obviously hurt us,” said Malone. “It was a killer and gave them all the momentum. You leave the door cracked for a team like Texas and it will take advantage of it.

“We’ve shown flashes of being competitive with teams like Texas and Rice for stretches. We just need to extend those stretches.”

After extending its lead to 8-3 in the fifth, the Longhorns erupted for six in the sixth to lead 14-3. Islander pitchers walked three batters in the inning, including two with the bases loaded, and Rupp emptied the bases with a three-run double. Rupp crossed the plate for the sixth run of the frame on a double Belt.

Texas added its final two runs in the seventh.

After Casey Whitmer (1-0) held the Islanders scoreless for a pair of innings to earn the win, A&M-Corpus Christi wouldn’t go quietly with four runs in the top of the eighth off Hunter Harris

With one away, Wheaton and Perales each singled. Marc Carrion followed with a single to drive in Wheaton before scoring along with Perales on a double by Chris Widner. Widner scored the final run when Brycen Bell reached on an error to make the score 16-7.

The Islanders finished the game with nine hits with Perales leading the way with two hits. Texas had 14 total hits with both Rupp and Shepherd posting four. The Longhorns drew nine walks and were hit by four pitches.
